Windows
Reducing window conductance is
best done by adding a second glazing layer which always reduces solar heat gain,
thus reducing annual cooling. When we compare realistic options, e.g., single
pane clear to double pane clear, or single pane tinted to double pane tinted,
the double pane unit shows lower annual cooling, as well as lower peak loads.
For more severe or winter climates there are windows with thermally broken aluminum frames and triple glazing. In addition these homes can be partially heated by the sun through passive solar design techniques and window coatings.
